The 5 compulsory holidays
Under the Employment Act, employers must give at least 11 gazetted public holidays a year. Five of them are compulsory: National Day (Merdeka), the Agong's Birthday, the birthday of your state's Ruler or Governor, Labour Day and Malaysia Day. You choose the other six from the gazetted list.
Replacement days
When a public holiday falls on a rest day, the next working day is usually given as a replacement holiday. In 2027 this matters for Chinese New Year Day 2 (Sunday 7 February), Awal Muharram (Sunday 6 June) and Maulidur Rasul (Sunday 15 August).
Weekends differ by state
Most states rest on Saturday and Sunday, but Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu rest on Friday and Saturday. If your team spans several states, the same holiday can create different long weekends.
Working on a public holiday
Employees covered by the Employment Act who work on a public holiday are paid at least two days' wages for that day (on top of the holiday pay they'd normally get), with higher rates for overtime.
